Promotion Playoff, 2md September 2007, Cleckheaton
City of York Athletic Clubs Junior (U20) team, having won the Penine Junior League and all their league matches convincingly this season, took part in a promotion playoff match with teams from three other leagues to try to gain entry to the Northern Premier League for next season.
Despite a number of unavailabilities of key athletes, the team spirit which has been prevalent all season came through, and York were victorious against the odds.
Every athlete pulled out all the stops, for example managing to come 4th instead of 5th meant extra points for the team, so it was not just event winners who brought about this success. There were individual wins for Chris Gill in the mens triple jump, Chris Taylor in the men’s 200m, Helen Goacher (on her birthday) in the ladies 100m hurdles and Iain Lynn in the 3000m.
Going into the closing relays, there were 4 teams vying for the two promotion places, all separated by less than 10 points. A club record ladies 4x400 and a record equalling mens 4x100 and excellent results in the other two relays brought York home in 1st place.
Next season they will be rubbing shoulders with teams such as Gateshead, Edinburgh, Sale, Leeds and Liverpool, but a repeat of the team spirit shown this season will mean that they will not be daunted by that prospect.
Team Managers Paul Wilson and Martin Rigby wanted to thank the team for their grit and determination during the season and how proud of the team we both are.
League Match, 29th April, Bolton
It turned out to be one of the best starts to a season the club has ever had with 1 club record, 19 personal bests
and 30 victories out of 70 events to give the team a total of 610 points which could be a new league record.
Performances by Tom Lightwing and Paul Allsopp stood out for the male team with wins in the pole vault, long jump
and a massive personal best in the High Jump of 1.82m for Tom Lightwing while Paul Allsopp(who is still only 16
and in a lower age group) had new personal bests in the javelin and high jump for wins. In the female team Laura
Rigby excelled in the triple jump where she jumped out to a new personal best and club record of 10.65m. Charlie
Maxted ran to a massive new personal best of 61.9 seconds. Lauren Bodie also did excellent in the field winning
the discus, shot putt and hammer.
Co-Team Managers Martin Rigby and Paul Wilson said, "What a great start to a new era of athletics in York.
The club and teams are moving the right way with a lot of strength in depth in all the age groups which helps to
give performances like today. We would like to say a big well done to all the athletes who excelled themselves
today with great performances and team spirit".
