The Sheffield Indoor Open. 25/11/06
This was the first meeting of the 2006-2007 Indoor Athletics season that Nestlé Rowntree Athletes
have competed in. Most events are run based purely on times and performances and consequently all
age groups are run together, with Men and Women competing on equal terms.
Nestle Rowntree athletes performed exceptionally well especially considering most training at this
time of year is based on strength and conditioning rather than any technical practise due to our lack
of indoor facilities. The 3 outstanding athletes of the day were Tom Bennington blasting to an easy
win in the 150m after a 3rd place in the 60m. Alisdair Dewar winning the Under 17 men's hurdles and
James Buck, our only under 15 representative, ran an outstanding 60m to beat the field comfortably
putting in the only sub 8 second performance of the age group. Our triple jumpers also did well with
Tom Lightwing and Chris Gill coming 3rd and 4th in the Senior Men's Triple jump and Laura Rigby 2nd
in the Senior Women's triple jump. Jess Foster set new personal bests in both the 60m and 150m,
beating many older women. Iain Lynn too, produced an outstanding time for the 2,000 m, setting a PB
in a race dominated by much older athletes. Other noteworthy performances:

Tom Lightwing 3rd 12.25

Junior Promotion Match, Cleckheaton 27/08/06
York athletes hold their own in international challenge
The Junior team (U20) of Nestle Rowntree Athletic Club fought hard in their weekend promotion match but fell short of the top two places which would have seen the team elevated to the Northern Premier division for Juniors.
The match was won by Edinburgh with Glasgow taking second place. These teams, which were combined teams of the clubs in the Scottish cities, proved too strong on the day with the North Wales combination team finishing third and Nestle coming a very creditable fourth.
We knew it was going to very tough against the Scottish teams and the Welsh team said Paul Taylor, club Chairman. However, our teenagers performed extremely well and demonstrated we are able to compete as a club at this level. We were missing some athletes due to holidays and they would certainly of strengthened our team further but full credit to the Scottish teams who turned out in force. This was our first promotion match for a number of years and we will certainly be aiming for this level again next year when the vast majority of the athletes are still young enough to compete in this age group.
The full results of the match were as follows
Edinburgh 586
Glasgow 495
North Wales 424
Nestle Rowntree(York) 396
Rotherham 362
Liverpool P&S 304
Cheshire Tigers 298
Spenborough 282
There were very few individual winners on the day for York but all the results of Rowntree athletes are given below.
The club now has to pick itself up for a further promotion match as on Saturday 2nd September the club will be battling in the Senior age group for promotion to the Northern Premier league. A number of the junior ranks will be turning out for what should be a strong team to take on Blackburn, Bingley, Bolton, Wigan, Rotherham, Boston and Middlebrough. The venue is Cleckheaton and the club is putting on a free bus for all athletes, club members, parents and friends in order to get as much support as possible on the day.

Northern Senior League, Middlesbrough 2/07/06
I haven't received the official results yet and annoyingly the results for our division don't seem to be getting
onto the North of England website. I do know however that we won again, comfortably by about 50 points and
that this win guarantees us the title (as long as we turn up for the last match) and a place in the promotion
playoff in September. Well done everyone.
Young Athletes League, Blackburn 25/06/06
In a close fought match we came 4th behind Gateshead. There were some fantastic individual performances,
Ashleigh Beckett winning female field performance of the meeting for her javelin throw and
with League bests for Laura Skelton (70H and Long J),Lauren Bodie (Shot, Discus and Hammer), Laura Rigby
(Triple Jump) and Helen Goacher (80H). The under 17 Girls 4 x 100 team set a club record.

NRAC again finished second in the YAL after a hard fought match for second place with Kingston-upon-Hull
A.C. We built up a 20 point lead on Hull, but this was wittled down to 3 points with just a few field
events, the steeplechase and the relays to go.
NRAC performed exceptionally well in these events. The final scores were:

National Junior League, Cleckheaton 7/5/06
The Nestle Rowntree junior (under 20) team continued their winning ways at Cleckheaton on Sunday but what a nail-biting finish there was.
In awfully wet conditions, the York athletes eventually battled their way to victory by 28 points as Preston and Spenborough ran the York team close.
This was the second victory of the season for the Rowntree’s team and looks promising for the team to push for a promotion place to the Premier division.
There were few individual winners on the day but good all-round performances across all the events ensured the team scored highly as the day concluded with a victorious but close finish.
In the mens’ events, there was a win in the A-string for Tom Bennington (200m – 22.8) and for the women, there were A-string wins for Jess Taylor (100m – 12.9), Becky Campsall
(200m – 26.2) Charlotte Maxted (3000m – 11.35.7), and the 4x100m relay team of Rigby/Campsall/ Hartley/Taylor who won in 51.6secs.
Final match result:
1st Nestle Rowntree 517 points
2nd Preston 489 points
3rd Spenborough 471 points
4th Bingley 420 points
5th Harrogate 336 points
6th Bolton 257 points
7th Horwich 61 points
8th Burnley 40 points
After two of the four matches, Rowntrees are top of the table with 16 points with Spenborough second on
13 points, Preston 3rd on 11 points and fourth place shared between Bingley and Harrogate on 10 points.

Northern League (Seniors), Jarrow 6/5/06
The seniors in Northern League East Division, continued the clubs excellent start to the track & field season,
winning their first match by 50 points.
This was without the strongest team being available. The target for the season surely has
to be to win the Division (as last year), but this time to gain promotion to the 1st Division.

National Junior League, Cleckheaton 23/4/06
The Nestle Rowntree junior team got their season off to a flying start with a very impressive victory in the first match of the season at Cleckheaton.
The junior league competition is for under-20 athletes and the York athletes produced a fantastic team performance to thrash their 7 opponents from across the Pennine region.
In the mens’ events, there were wins in the A-string for Ali Smith (800m - 1.59.8), Seb Batchelor (3000m – 9.28.9), Chris Gill (Discus – 29.95) and Nathan Forrest (Javelin – 55.47 and Triple Jump – 11.84).
For the women, there were A-string wins for Jess Taylor (200 – 26.0 and 100m Hurdles - 16.5), Charlotte Maxted (1500m – 5.21.6), Vicky Needham (3000m – 10.52.7 and Pole Vault – 1.75) and Alice McCabe (400mHurdles – 69.3).
However it was a real team effort with some excellent performances across all the events thus contributing to the high score the team ultimately achieved. The team spirit was best displayed as the meeting came to an end as the York team cheered three of the four relay teams to victory which completed an enjoyable day of athletics.
However, individual achievement is also recognised and it was pleasing to see Nathan Forrest awarded the “athlete of the match” award for his javelin performance with a very impressive throw of 55.47m.
The final match result was as follows:
1st Nestle Rowntree 559 points
2nd Spenborough 376 points
3rd Harrogate 375 points
4th Bingley 349 points
5th Preston 345 points
6th Bolton 284 points
7th Horwich 163 points
8th Burnley 102 points

Jolly Holly Jog 10k 31st December 06
We had a good turnout for this with 16 running and some great results with 5 category winners. Conditions were not
ideal, heavy rain had made the off road parts of the course very muddy. With the course about 50:50 road and off road,
deciding on appropriate footwear was quite a problem. The ladies race was dominate by our own Becky Penty who won by 2
minutes in a very respectable time of 38m 6s considering underfoot conditions. Dawn Gibbs was 3rd lady and unsurprisingly
won the ladies over 50 category very comfortably. With Emma Willits 8th (2nd under 21) and Angela Peace 9th the ladies
won the team competition. Other good performances came from Vicky Needham, 3rd under 21 and Leola Cruden-Smith who
was the youngest runner.
On the mens side Andy Normandale was similarly dominant in the mens over 50 category with 9th place overall and in fact
beat all the over 40 and over 45 veterans for good measure. Mike Hetherton won the over 60's age group.

were 1st and 2nd in the over 50's. For the women Jo ellerton, Karen Wood and Emma Willits were 2nd, 3rd and 4th,
with Joanne Hunt in 12th place completing the team. Jo and Karen were 1st and 2nd in the over 35's category.
The Acorn womens team beat Knavesmire by 21 points to 36.

Yorkshire Vets Run, Heslington 7th May 06
I know this isn't a road race, but I never know what category to put it in ! The overnight rain
made for very muddy conditions on the Outgang, but there was still a good field of 100 runners.
Knavesmire rather dominated proceedings, but our own Andy Normandale was 3rd (2nd over 45) and Steve
Mummery was 25th (5th over 50). It was very disappointing that we only managed to turn out 2 runners !
Thanks to everyone who helped and made the event run so smoothly.
The results are on the Yorkshire vets website - see link at bottom of the page.
London Marathon 23rd April 06

ran 2 hours 42 minutes.
Other finishers were:
Dave Chaplin - 2-58.31
Colin Utterson - 3-16.35
Dave Elliot - 3-28.41
Stephen Korobejko - 3-32.04
Becky Penty - 3-40.00

Here is a race report from Stuart Thomas:
London Marathon 23 April 2006
We all know this event takes a lot of training to ensure any entrant actually makes it round the 26.2 miles. But in parallel with this can be some extra elements to manage like how to get there, sponsorship and eating the right sort of foods.
The training can be and was certainly for me a frustrating time. It is around New Years eve when you are supping away to a great New Year, when you realise that tomorrow the training starts in earnest, well maybe! I suffered like most with symptoms of colds and alike through the months of January and February and before I knew it, March was here, dafodills were in bud and I was doing the Marathon in April!! I decided the coach's (The Right Hon Mr Wilcock) advice of not racing events but merely entering them as a target and part of the training was a cracking idea. Only I decided that not to enter any at all was the way forward and in the end manage to continue motivating myself to plod out on my own.
Other tips from the coach included no alcohol beverage in the last couple of weeks of training (I had no disposable income anyway, so easily accepted), avoid Tea and Coffee (who needs them anyway, although biscuit dunking is not the same!) and certainly avoid being a tourist on the Saturday in London, (so consequently I went to bed on Saturday afternoon, ahhhh). Excellent tips!
So come the weekend of the race the plan of action on how to get there was executed and indeed arrived at the Expo Exhibition (to register for the race) in good time on the Friday. Whilst there, I managed some pasta and ended up sitting on a bench seat next to people that no doubt I will never meet again but the buzz of excitement was building!
Now Saturday was a complete day off. Sunday having managed to talk the Hotel in opening up breakfast early ie 7am, I was then quickly away on the road to BlackHeath.
Even this was an experience, because as I left the Hotel around 7:45, I was soon aware of others coming out of the woodwork making their way to Victoria Station. Then a few underground stops on, Embankment, was swarming. This followed a brisk walk to Charing Cross and now the game was on. Lots of people trying to second guess which train was the right one! then the announcement was made, huge rush and phew made it. Subsequently the 3 later stops that the train made, no-one got on or off as the train was packed.
Blackheath, was a welcomed site even in the drizzle. Time seemed to pass by very quickly and soon I was in the line for the start and Miss Grindley said a quick hello before setting her sights on the way ahead. Then the gun and we were off, well 2mins later the start line arrived. A little unnerved at first as a man dressed in Bob The Builder outfit was in front of me hmmm! I know my training had not gone as well as I would have liked, but really, was this man going to do a sub 4hr Marathon in this huge suit. Suffice to say after a pedestrian 1st Mile he was behind me and the race plan was being executed. The first few miles a little slower than I would have liked due to the amount of congestion, but hey, time to take in the sights, music and atmosphere. Oh yes, the noise and support is absolutley awesome!!
Time rolled by and I know my family would be at 13miles ish, so feeling good I looked and eventually spotted them and then I was back in the zone, but hey there goes Jo Ellerton in the opposite direction , at 22 miles. I gave her a shout but she was running well and I still had miles to go (although she did have 45 mins start on me!!) Then by 17 miles I was begining to feel pain, that only eventually left me when I finished about an hour later.
Although, as I was digging in to keep going and push on I was aware of two tall figures gracing the Embankment road. I lifted my hand to acknowledge them, but such was the talent on offer I was not even on the radar. But then the legendary foghorns gave it some vocal and soon I was made to feel like a celebrity. Cheers lads (Messers Hilton & Kingsnorth).
I then only had to keep this up to ensure a sub 4hr time. So when the Mall came all pain left me and I just gave it all. Wow what a feeling to finish, then the thought, maybe next year I could do it all again!!
Guiseley Gallop/Isle of Man Athletic Festival 16th April 06
Andy Hilton retained his title in the Guiseley Gallop by a minute and a half with a winning time that was
the 2nd fastest ever. Andy Normandale (15th) won the over 45 age group, while other finishers were Jerry Barnes (51st),
Mike Tasker (202nd) and Peter Murray (317th) out of 528 finishers.
Meanwhile reports reach us of stunning performances in the Isle of Man Athletics Festival by Clare Duck.
She was 3rd in the 10k race in 37m 14s, 3rd in the hill race and 3rd in the 5k in 17m 48s. Perhaps
unsurprisingly she finished 3rd overall. The 5k and 10k times are new Acorn club records.
Dawn Gibbs was 1st lady in the recent Coniston 14 road race in a field of 1350.
All the more remarkable since Dawn is now running in the over 50's age group !
Nestle Rowntree Cross Country Report 5 -27th January 2007
The Hilton's comments....
I'm going to have to keep this brief, I've just had an excruciating massage where all the crunchiness
my muscles “earned” over the course of the Northern XC been painful coaxed out... Remember
kids, if it hurts then it must be doing you some good!
While I'm on the subject though, and I guess this is the point of Report 5 (they just keep coming!!),
great job done by everybody who turned out at the North of England XC champs on Saturday 28th
January. The weather held out for us and the course was a true test, I hope you had fun.
I know I keep banging on about it but great support on the course for all our athletes, it really does
help. Even though it is some time until the National XC Champs, with a confirmed entry of 58
Nestle Rowntree athletes it promises to be a great day. If you can be around to cheer on fellow club
mates either before or after your race it could make that bit of difference to their performance (and
they may return the favour).
The next big outing for the thoroughly deserving few is the Inter-Counties on 26th February. I'll be
down there with my big rattle and Rowntrees rosette.... gooooo greens! (Too much NFL Andy)
For now, happy running!

Race Results
Saturday 27th January North of England XC Champs, Heaton Park Manchester
It is often the case that the Northerns attracts a smaller entry from our club than almost any other
big XC race. That's something to look at next year but this year we can at least say we were
represented in every age category, boys and girls. As a result the crowd always had at least one
Rowntree athlete to witness in glorious technicolor...
I had originally planned to do this in the order the races fell but having lost the programme it'll have
to be in the traditional, youngest-first fashion (so much for innovation).
So the U13s. To my mind one of the performances of the day was produced by the squad's
youngest member Katy Wood. Despite only being at the very bottom of the age range Katy
produced an exceptional run to place 104th in a field of 189. Great to see someone getting stuck in
so much so early, well done.
In the U13 lads, Oliver Dixon built upon has victory in the Humberside county championships with
a battling 6th place. Such has been the standard of Oli's performances so far this season that we
almost come to expect these high placings but in reality every run deserves a big mention. So
great work Oli, looking forward to seeing how you get on (on TV) at the Inter-Counties.
Jenny Parker produced another fine performance in the U15 girls. The story of Jenny's season has
been continuous improvement in the face of higher standard opposition and this was no exception.
In a high quality field 51st (of 158) is a tremendous piece of running, well done.
There are some other candidates for performance of the day but my vote (and since this is my little
republic of running, it's the only one that counts) goes to Kieran Smith for his frankly astounding
4th place in the U15. I shouldn't have been shocked having witnessed a gritty run at Skipton earlier
in the month but this run took the biscuit (and should have taken bronze had the course been 100m
longer). Great job that man.
Not forgetting our other entrant in the U15 race, Tom Keighley, who showed real strength of
character to battle his way round the course. His placing of 145th was clearly hard-earned and Tom
can be proud of the effort he put down get it. Nice one.
The U17 girls couldn't quite complete a team but they were led home by Vicky Needham in 25th
who keeps pulling out runs of great quality. Sophie and Katie Hunter were locked in their own
mini-battles for 68th and 77th respectively which no doubt pulled them through to these fine
positions. Excellent job done by the three should have a great team out for the Nationals!
Iain Lynn was suffering in the build up to the weekend and 32nd was some way down on his own
high expectations. However, given he always claims to have one bad one each XC champ season
hopefully he's got it out of the way in readiness for the Inter-Counties. Good effort nonetheless.
In the U20 women's race Emma Willits more than made up for her disappointment at the
Yorkshire's to card a fine 21st place. The course obviously suited, the muddy sections seemingly the
areas where she made the most ground on and over her rivals. Good to see!
Phil Graves powered round the Heaton Park mud in the final race of the day. Competing over the
toughest conditions of the day seems to have worked out just right for Big Phil, 38th place (of 95)
proving exactly that. Good job mate.
The senior women's race saw Becky Penty produce another excellent run (despite being another
with a cold in the build up). Her now-traditional steady start and subsequent stream-roller through
tactics came up with the goods, 11th place being the reward here. Tremendous.
Also in action were our (ahem) veterans (though you'd never believe it if you met them) Karen
Wood and Jo Ellerton. Excellent runs for 98th and 168th respectively although Jo in particular was
adamant this was only a training run after recent fell-based escapades. So job done nice one.
The senior men's team completed for 13th despite being depleted. Linking up with the club for the
time this season, Hywel Care produced a superb performance to come home 24th in a high calibre
field. Yorkshire's loss is Merseyside's gain for the Inter-counties but cut him and he bleeds green
(he's so Rowntrees you see, a Nestle-lian if you will). Great work mate.
Further back, I was pleased with my 38th and Piran White just missed out on the top 100 with his
107th. Still an excellent run from a man who's getting his race legs back on. Mike Raynes,
complete with Ozzy (Australia not Osbourne) tan, once again found himself in the 180's with 189th,
good to see him back in action. Steve Simpson worked his way round doggedly for 231st and
Martin Kirby completed the team with a well-earned 257th. No forgetting Alan Lynn who's 465th
was a great run that had almost 200 hardy souls trailing in his wake! Good job chaps...
So in summary, I consider this an appetiser for the Inter-Counties champagne and National
strawberries (better metaphors to me at the usual address). I well-satisfied in the interim but I can't
wait to gorge myself on the upcoming main events. Well done to you all!
NYSD reports will follow when I've got some more time... apologies to all those who were looking
forward to those.
What's next??
24th February 2007: Inter-County Championships (invitation only) Wollaton Park, Nottingham
.....this is live on SkySports so set your video/digital equivalent to savour the action!!
10th March 2007: National Cross Country Championships Herrington Country Park, Sunderland
....the big one, let's have a HUGE turnout.
Any thoughts? Any feedback, keep sending it on to aj.hilton@virgin.net.
I'm off to have my tea (or dinner, or supper)...

Report 4 - 6th January 2007
The Hilton's comments....
Hi there,
For the majority of the populace the festive season will have been spent pigging out, goggle-boxing
and taking it nice and easy. From the look of the Rowntree athletes at Skipton on Saturday monklike
dedication to their running had forbid any such sacrifice on the alter of fitness. By this I mean
you all seemed well up for it...
Was it just me or did the hills at Aireville Park, Skipton seem to have grown since the last time we
visited? Maybe it's my memory. Certainly though it will be difficult to forget the way all of our
lads and lasses got stuck in. Quite literally stuck in that is, stuck in the gallons of mud bused in for
the occasion.
While everyone played their part at a great event, it would be remiss of me not to make special
mention of some incredible and mentally indelible performances by certain members. So a beltin'
effort to Becky Penty who made club history with her silver medal winning run in the senior
women's race, a stunning achievement. Also a great job goes out to the U17 ladies team who
secured a silver in their race, a really fine collective result that only hints at the pool of talent we
can muster as a club when we put our minds to it.
These results plus others mean the club has no less than six representatives at the Inter-Counties on
24th February:
Becky Penty (Yorkshire)
Vicky Graves (Yorkshire)
Vicky Needham (Yorkshire)
Kieran Smith (Yorkshire)
Iain Lynn (Yorkshire)
Hywel Care (Merseyside)
Best of luck to you all, I'll be there to give you an ear-full from the sidelines....
For now, happy running!

Christmas/New Year event
The results of the Christmas Relay on 28th December are on Dave Pavers website:
Dave Paver's Athletics website
Report 3 - 3rd December 2006
The Hilton's comments....
Hi there,
The picture above (though not particularly arresting (particularly since I haven't managed to get it on
the website)) is appropriate. Apparently this is an image of
a cluster of young stars (emerging from the Eagle nebula). If it's not too much of a literary stretch,
I'd like to parallel this picture with the continued emergence of our own young stars who produced
some stellar cross country performances (I'm getting the hang of this) on Sunday.
The weather was inclement in Guiseley and I understand Dave Paver over in Thirsk spent the entire
NYSD senior men's race wondering when he'd see his tent flying off over the horizon. However,
those that survived (and this was all of us incidentally) will definitely be the stronger for it.
An apology from me for those at Guiseley. I didn't really arrange a central meeting point for the
team and as a result we were spread a bit thin especially for the early races. Hopefully, in the
absence of Dave's tent at some of the championship races I'll make some sort of provision to bring
us together and get that team feeling going early doors.
Finally, thanks for the support during my race. It's always encouraging to get the chivvy on when
your surrounded by the Leeds runner(s) who everybody seems to cheer for. I hope everybody else
felt supported too. I know it's sometimes a bit difficult to arrive early or stay a little later but even if
it means watching just one more race and supporting another club-mate, it goes down really well,
trust me.
For now, happy runnin'!!

Race Results
Sunday 3rd December, Nunroyd Park, Guiseley (WY)
Wild and windy and quite muddy, that was Nunroyd Park on Sunday. Remarkably it wasn't as
muddy as last year but times were roughly equivalent so it can't have too much easier. The green
and black vest was evident in all but one of the races, 23 individuals in total - numbers reduced
from last time by a combination of the weather and the need to sort out Christmas...
First race of the day produced one of the best performance improvements of the series. It was
fabulous to see U11G Shannon Ellerton come home in 33rd (out of 44) in the process beating many
of the athletes who until then had been up to a minute quicker. Really encouraging to see one of
our runners make such a big stride so early in her running career, well done!!
In the U13G category Francesca Keighley maintained the consistent form that saw her complete
three of the four series races. Fran came home 39th in the biggest field so far in this age group. A
great base for the forthcoming championships, good work!
Oliver Dixon couldn't do much more given the high standards he has set himself this season.
Showing great discipline in a fast-starting U13B race, Oliver pulled his way through the field to
pick up another 2nd place. In doing so he ensured he captured 2nd place overall in the series, an
excellent result mate, good job!
On a day of improvements Jenny Parker wasn't about to be left behind in the U15G race. Jenny's
4th place on the day is her best performance of the series and again an example of the importance of
getting used to this type of surface in order to get better on it. Really good running Jenny (who was
7th overall in the series).
The U15B race was another chance to see Keiran Smith battle his way round for another 3rd on the
day. This ensured 3rd overall in the series was his, so well done fella! Tom Keighley produced
another fine effort for his 22nd place and in doing do completed the series in 25th. Great work lads!
The U17G title was already wrapped up by Vicky Graves with her three wins out of three. Despite
feeling pretty rotten (and not helped by the weather) Vicky still came home 4th and was one of the
few athletes to complete all four races. Special congratulations on the overall victory Vicky.
Worth mentioning two notable absentees here. Neither Sophie Hunter nor Vicky Needham ran
this weekend (the latter was willing but sadly her car was not) but both were instrumental in the
U17G team picking up 3rd team overall and individually finishing 8th and 3rd overall. Great team
effort ladies!
The U17B race witnessed another fine effort from Iain Lynn who, as I keep mentioning, has
another year in this category. On a course he claims to dislike Iain produced a solid effort to come
home 6th on the day. This gauranteed 4th overall in the series which knowing Iain he won't content
with but is a really excellent foundation on which to build. Well done lad!
It was also encouraging to see James Palmer cruising round for 20th in the U17B race. I'm sure
James is convinced he's no cross country runner but on the evidence of this his track running can
only benefit if he transfers the guts he showed (not literally) to the tartan. Nice one!
A bit of history was witnessed in the senior women's race when Becky Penty came home in 1st
place after a domineering display of front running. Reference to the relevant Rowntree's sages
failed to come up with another example of a Rowntree-based senior winner of a West Yorks league
XC in recent times. Becky's victory sealed the overall series win and I think sets her up for an
excellent championship campaign. Well done that lass!
Taking close order further down the field Emma Willits produced another superb piece of running
for 18th place on the day and Jo Ellerton, doubtless inspired by her daughter's early success, came
home 25th to take 2nd overall in the F35 category. Well done ladies!
The senior men's race was an exciting affair with a monumental 4-way battle for 2nd involving
Andy Hilton which eventually resulted in a 3rd place on the day when Kim Critchley gave him the
slip late on in the final stages.
The men's team once again sealed a 3rd place on the day with the following gargantuan efforts:
Mark Metcalfe 25th - finally coming to terms with XC mud!
Phil Graves 28th; the watch word being consistency from our Phil.
Mark Dowson 43rd; another improved runner over the course of the series.
Andy Normandale 44th; a half century notched up and still mixing it with the fast guys.
Oli Fahey 47th – threatening to be a very good XC runner in the next few years.
Mike Raynes 54th his best XC run so far before he goes to Oz to give the Ashes back.
Martin Kirby 72nd; far more solid and consistent than the course; great job.
Jim Shemilt 95th; confessed to having enjoyed the mud and mess, a running addict.
Paul Priestley 101st; the comeback continues with another combative effort.
Alan Lynn 156th; anchored the lads home, good work.
In summary, everybody should be very proud of their efforts, a really good team performance
across the whole series. I intend to pass on the clubs thanks to the series organisers who put on such
an enjoyable set of events. Hope you had a good time!!
Sunday 3rd December - Thirsk (NYSD)
Reports from Thirsk suggest the West Yorkshire weather was replicated in North Yorkshire
ensuring everybody enjoyed proper cross country conditions no matter where they were on
Sunday.
In the U13G race Rachel Colton, Saffron Botterill and Rebecca James continued to show
excellent form with 6th , 9th and 19th respectively. Excellent runs by each of you.
In the U15G race there was a 6th place for B Brown and a 10th place for H Bates - apologies I don't
have first names, good effort there.
The U13B saw A Chatters come home 14th and in the U15B race there was a 7th place for B
France. Good work chaps.
The senior race witnessed another strong run from Andrew Nesom for 28th, reports that he is piling
in the miles ready for the Brass Monkey at the end of January look to be born out. Also showing
good form for 92nd was Dave Paver doubtless hastened by the prospect of losing his tent to the
storms. Great job chaps!
There are more NYSD races next year for those West Yorkies looking for more fun!
What's next??
I've collected a lot of championship entry forms, thanks to everybody for making this job that bit
easier. By the time you get this, North of England entries will have closed. Yorkshire champs
entries will be tight but do get in touch if you've not let me know, there may still be time if I know
by 13/12/06. National entry forms have just arrived so be quick for these as well if you haven't let
me know already.
Got a point to make?!
If you have any XC related problems or suggestions, or simply want to praise/criticise me I'm only
an email away.... get in touch at aj.hilton@virgin.net.
Have a Merry Christmas,

Report 2 - 19th November 2006
The Hilton's comments....
Hi there,
There's been plenty of cross country action has been seen in the past month. Great turnouts at the
second and third West Yorkshire League meetings were accompanied more excellent performances.
Also recently, Nestle Rowntree AC was well represented at the English Cross Country Relays in
Mansfield on 4th November.
The photo above was taken right at the end of the Relay day, a bunch of tired seniors and a partly
disassembled tent are featured. The weather was perfect, the course was testing and the competition
was intense. Cheers to everybody who ran, ferried and organised a special nice one to Dave for
sorting out the younger teams and the legendary tent.
I think it's worth mentioning, the atmosphere at the events so far has been fantastic. It's good to see
people arriving early or staying on late to support team mates in races other than their own. From
speaking to a lot of you I know this is really appreciated. Keep up the good work!
Hopefully I'll be seeing you at an XC soon or be in touch about the upcoming championship races.
For now, happy runnin'!!

Race Results
Sunday 29th October Boddington Hall, Leeds (WY)
For those who completed their race the general opinion was that the course would have been tough
enough without the unseasonally warm sunshine. We had a great turnout, twenty-six Nestle
Rowntree athletes taking part in the afternoon's fun. The breakdown:
Great to see the youngsters enjoying their XC. In the U11s, Shannon Ellerton completed another
tough race to finish 43rd and Edward Dixon was 17th. Well done to those two.
We had three U13s in club colours. Fran Keighley was 35th for the girls, Oliver Dixon produced a
fabulous run for 2nd place and Seb Crane followed him home for a solid 34th.
Jenny Parker continued her good work in the U15 category with an excellent 7th place. Keiran
Smith's 2nd place was an awesome effort and Tom Keighley battled hard for 25th.
The U17 girls were the first complete Rowntrees team of the day, running away with the overall
victory. The Vickys, Vicky Graves and Vicky Needham, dominated as they had done two
weeks previously with 1st and 2nd place respectively. Sophie Hunter produced another great run to
come home in 11th place.
In his first year as a first year U17, Iain Lynn continued to mix it with the top lads with an
excellent 3rd place.
The senior women's team picked up 2nd place thanks to a great collective effort. Becky Penty
continued her chase for the overall title as she came home 2nd. Making their first appearances of
the XC season Claire Duck was a solid 5th and Dawn Gibbs was 19th. Jo Ellerton closed out the
team with an excellent 28th position.
The senior men's team was 5th overall. Lead home by the returning Andy Burt (29th) a total of nine
chaps completed the challenge: Mark Metcalfe (36th), Oli Fahey (44th), Phil Graves (66th),
Martin Kirby (73rd), Andy Nesom (74th), Mark Dowson (77th), Mike Raynes (100th) and Stuart
Thomas (208th).
Great work by everybody!
Sunday 29th October Caedmon School, Whitby (NYSD Relays)
The U13 girls were well represented at the relays. L Skelton, R Coulton and B Yeldon were 4th
while S Botterill, K Robson and R James completed a composite team for 7th.
In the U15s, R Parkinson completed the first leg as our sole representative in this age group.
Well done girls!
Saturday 4th November National Cross Country Relays, Mansfield

Sunday 19th November Thornes Park, Wakefield (WY)
This Sunday we had the highest number of entrants in an XC league fixture. I counted twenty
seven Rowntree athletes throughout the day not to mention the great support around the tough,
undulating Wakefield course. Well done to everybody involved.
First mention goes to the U17 ladies team who all but wrapped up the overall team title with
another resounding win. Led home again by Vicky Graves who closed out the U17 individual title
with her 3rd straight win. As has been the case all the way through the league fixtures, she was
followed home by Vicky Needham (who despite feeling under the weather still made 5th place) and
Sophie Hunter (who produced her best performance so far for 7th). Great job girls!
Other excellent individual efforts came from Becky Penty who's second 2nd place put her in pole
position to secure the overall senior women's title and Oliver Dixon who mirrored Becky's placing
in the U13 race and looks a good bet for at least the silver medal.
Across the board though it was a good day. In the U11s Shannon Ellerton saw off another
challenge for 47th and Philip Nesom took 30th in his first outing for the club at this level.
Jenny Parker continued to build on her XC credentials with an excellent 7th place in the U15 girls,
while Keiran Smith's 3rd and Liam Robson's 35th both deserve praise in the U15 lads race.
Iain Lynn continued to showcase his considerable potential in his first year in the U17s. Despite
being another runner under the weather, his 7th place was hard earned and keeps him in the overall
medal hunt.
The senior ladies couldn't complete a team but alongside Becky, Helen Garnham's pre-holiday 13th
and Jo Ellerton's tenacious 28th gave the Rowntree support significant cause for cheer.
A total of fourteen senior men took up the challenge. Making his first (fully fit) appearance of the
season, Andy Hilton came home 3rd to lead the A team to third place overall.
Phil Graves powered round for a tremendous 20th position with the rest of the A's taking close
order: Piran White (29th), Mark Metcalfe (31st), Andy Normandale (45th) and Andy Burt (52nd).
The men's B team comprised of some more fine runs: Mark Dowson (56th), Mike Raynes (63rd),
Martin Kirby (79th), Andy Nesom (84th), Jim Shemilt (93rd) and Paul Priestly (96th). Providing
vital backup and giving 100%, Alan Lynn (158th) and Stuart Thomas (195th) ensured a quality
Rowntrees showing in the final race of the day.
Great job by the team, hopefully we can produce an even better turnout to round off a great West
Yorkshire League season at Guiseley on 3rd December. Well done!
Sunday 19th November Guisborough (NYSD)
At the Guisborough edition of the NYSD XC league we had a number of Rowntrees
representatives.
In the U13 girls race Rachel Colton and Saffron Botterill produced excellent performances for 7th
and 9th overall. In the U15 girls, Roisin Parkinson was a commendable 10th place. Dave Paver
also took to the country, finishing 111th in the senior men's race.
Well done to you all!
Cheers, Andy Hilton (Nestle Rowntree XC un-coordinator)
Report 1 - 14th/15th October 2006
The Hilton's comments....
Hiya! Thought I'd try and get a few reports out there to give everyone an idea how the club as a
whole did and take the opportunity to say “nice one” to all those that took part. Remember, if you
had a good time then tell others in the club about it – the more people that take part, the more fun it
can be!!
The sharp-eyed amongst you may have noted that I wasn't there in person so all this is based on
what you lot have told me. In my defence, I was out running for the club on the fells on Saturday
but I promise to be at the second match to be part of the party...
First, a big thank you to Steve Collett for sorting out the entries and managing all the little things
that the first race in a series always throw up. A few people were missed on the initial entry form
but all that should be sorted out for the second race.
Secondly, thanks to all those that raced. From what I'm told (and this is born out in the results) we
had representatives in every West Yorkshire League race of the day. It's great to see and is a good
position on which to build for the later league races and the championships early next year.
We had some great individual performances and some solid team performances which I've written
about below, but the most important thing is that everyone had a good time. If there's anything we
can do to make it more enjoyable (I can't help with the weather or the mud sadly) just get in touch.
Otherwise I see you on Sunday 29th October at Boddington Hall, Leeds!
Happy runnin'!!

Race Results
Saturday 14th October; Salendine Nook, Huddersfield (WY)
Ladies
The senior and junior women both counted towards the same team result, an excellent 3rd place
which bodes well for the rest of the series given the depth we have in this part of the team. Karen
Wood lead the ladies home in 14th, closely followed by confessed track runner Helen Garnham
(18th). Emma Willits pulled out a solid 24th place (placing her 4th in the Junior women's race) with
Jo Ellerton coming home 29th (perfect preparation for the following day's 10km!).
Probably the best collective and individual results of the day were in the U17 girls race. Vicky
Graves demonstrated excellent early-season form, pulling away to take 1st from Vicky Needham
(herself well clear for 2nd). Well backed up by Sophie (8th) and Katie (14th) Hunter, the team was
an easy age group winner. Great job.
Although other age groups didn't complete teams there were some encouraging individual
performances. Jenny Parker (7th) and Charlotte Mason (19th) started solidly in the U15 category.
Francesca Keighley came home 28th in the U13 section and Katy Wood (6th) and Shannon
Ellerton (37th) showed promise in the U11 field.
Lads
The senior men were the only male section to complete a team and although the overall 5th place
could be seen as disappointing in some quarters, the depth of our entry and the contribution of the
junior element is an encouraging sign.
Mark Metcalfe lead the chaps home in 27th, followed by Phil Graves (38th & 7th junior), Steve
Simpson (60th), Mike Raynes (65th), Andy Nesom (68th), Mark Dowson (78th), Oli Fahey (84th
& 17th junior), Martin Kirby (92nd), Tom Vale (97th), Alan Lynn (163rd) and Stuart Thomas
(187th). Having got the taste dare we expect a few places improvement with each coming race? It's
a target for sure!
Stepping up into a new age group is never easy but Iain Lynn produced the gent's performance of
the day coming home 6th in the U17 category. Both Tom Keighley (26th) and Liam Robson (35th)
battled well in the U15 version and the U13 and U11 saw encouraging efforts from Seb Crane
(29th) and Matthew Parker (15th) respectively.
Sunday 15th October NYSD; Summerhill, Hartlepool (NYSD)
We had a number of representatives in the first race of the North Yorkshire South Durham XC races
in Hartlepool on Sunday.
Seb Batchelor showed great early form by winning the U17 race. The Nesoms made an
appearance with Andrew placing 33rd (9th Vet) in the senior men's race and daughter Victoria
placing 23rd in the U15 race. David Gibson also opened this year's XC account with 97th (10th V50)
in the senior race. Great work.
If you have any XC related problems or suggestions, or simply want to praise/criticise me I'm only
an email away.... get in touch at aj.hilton@virgin.net.
Cheers, Andy Hilton (Nestle Rowntree XC un-coordinator)
Hob Moor training event 3rd May 06
It was a lovely evening, with a bigger field than last year and an excellent sprint finish.
Thanks to Dave Paver for organising it and everyone else who helped. Results on Dave Pavers website:

Cleveland Winter Series
Due to clashing races nobody from the club did the 1st race of the series at Cock Howe. However there
was a good turnout for the 2nd race, the Saltersgate Gallows from the Hole of Horcum (north of Pickering)
on 22nd October. Andy Hilton was quickly to the fore, but paid the price of leading by missing a turning.
However he soon regained the lead and won comfortably, but failed to take the course record thanks to a
strong wind and muddy conditions as well as the navigation error. The course record therefore remains
held jointly by Paul Stevenson and our own Piran White who was running for Leeds City when he set it.
Further down the field Andy Normandale made a winning debut in the over 50's (despite not being 50 for
another month !). Mike Hetherton won the over 60's and Jim Shemilt was narrowly beaten for 1st over 55.
Veterans should note that the races now have 5 year age bands. For the women Jo Ellerton was 3rd. Also running
were Pete Atkinson and John McDonough.
National Fell Relay Championships, Calderdale, 14/10/06
Having this championship on home territory (almost) was too good an opportunity to miss, despite
clashing with the West Yorks League cross country. Andy Hilton got the team off to a great start on leg 1
with 12th place over the 6 mile leg. Leg 2 is a longer one of 9 miles, run in pairs with Piran White and Andy Normandale
dropping to 20th place. Leg 3 is also run in pairs and is over 6 miles, but with navigation skills required. The route
required various checkpoints to be visited though teams could make their own route choices. Navigation
supremo Steve Mummery was paired with supervet Jim Shemilt and they fell to 38th place. On the 4th and last leg
over the same leg as the 1st, but run in the opposite direction, Pete Atkinson brought the team home in 40th place.
This was an excellent result out of over 100 teams. The last time the club had a team in this event,
2 years ago we finished 66th. Next year the event is in Bowland so hopefully we should be able to get a team out again
and it has been suggested that we should aim to enter a vets team as well as an open team.
World Masters Mountain Running Champs, Switzerland 24/9/06
The club had 2 representatives, Mike Hetherton and Andy Normandale. The trip proved very enjoyable,
though the standard was noticable higher than last year when many of the top europeans didn't run in
the Keswick race. Mike was 25th in the over 60's race while Andy was 21st in the over 45's. Next years
championship is in Austria and both are hoping to go again.
Viking Chase Fell Race 17th September
A small race but a very good one which deserves to be more popular. It was won by Roger Tomlin of North Yorks
Moors with our own Andy Normandale 2nd and 1st over 40 vet, 23 seconds adrift. Pete Atkinson was 8th,
Jim Shemilt 9th (1st over 50) and Mike Hetherton 12th (1st over 60). For Normandale and Hetherton this was a
last warmup before the World Masters Mountain Running Championships in Switzerland on 23rd September.
Ingleborough Fell Race 15th July
We have been doing so well in the Cleveland Summer Fell series we though it would be good to pit ourselves
against some different competition. We didn't get out our strongest team but still came 2nd team to
Pudsey&Bramley. On a scorching hot day Andy Hilton was 1st counter in 10th with Andy Normandale 24th and Mike
Raynes 33rd. Pete Atkinson and Mike Hetherton also finished.
Danefield Relay, Otley, 4th July
This was the first time we had done this event, but it's definately one to do again. The relay consisted
of 3 laps of a 3 mile course which was runnable, but with a very tough climb to the finish. Mike Raynes started
us off and returned in 5th place, with Pudsey and Bramley vets already in the lead. On the 2nd leg Andy Normandale
pulled up to 3rd, behind 2 P&B teams with the vets having a significant lead. Andy Hilton ran a storming last leg,
passing the P&B 'youth' team half way round and narrowly failing to catch the vets team. Andy got the days fastest
leg with a time that was very close to Ian Fishers course record.
Cleveland Summer Series:
Bizarely the last race in the Summer series was the Castleton 10k road race. Andy Hilton, having only
run 5 races needed this race to claim the overall title. He won, knocking 2 mins off the course record
with a time of 32m 42s. Our only other competitor was Suzi Grindley, 5th Lady in 49m 10s.
Overall in the series Andy Hilton and Mike Hetherton were champions in the senior and over 60 categories
while Andy Normandale was 3rd over 40.
Gribdale Gallop 11th July. Andy Hilton blasted off from the gun and was never challenged, winning
in a time not far off the course record. Behind him Mike Raynes and Andy Normandale had a good battle with
Andy eventually prevailing for 7th place, with Mike 8th. Pete Atkinson was 39th while North York Moors took the
team.
5th Race Whorlton Run 20th June. We had a poor turnout due to a clash with the World Cup. Sarah Tunstall
won the ladies while Andy Normandale had his best run of the series to finish 4th in the mens (only 3rd vet !) and
Mike Hetherton won the over 60's age group as he has in all the races so far.
4th Race Langdale End Scarborough 6th June. Our team threw away a winning position with some careless navigation
with Mike Hetherton left as our only winner in the over 60's category. Andy Hilton went out strongly and soon established a
substantial lead. Behind him Graham Birch and Andy Normandale started a bit more steadily and them pulled through the field.
By the top of the hill they were in 1st, 2nd and 4th places. Shortly after this though the navigation error occurred, Andy
Hilton probably running an extra mile. Andy pulled back up to 4th while Birch and Normandale were 12th and 13th.
3rd race Lordstones/Wainstones 21st May. The mens team's unbeaten record in this years summer series
was unlikely to continue given that this race was an English Championship race. We finished 14th team.
Individually Andy Hilton was 29th while Sarah Tunstall was 14th in the ladies. The NYM website (see below)
has the full results and promises 100's of photo's. I bet a few runners were surprised how tough a fell
race on the North York Moors can be !
2nd race Fox & Hounds Chase, Ainthorpe (nr Castleton) 9th May. The mens team triumphed again, led by
Andy Burt 3rd with Graham Birch 4th, and Normandale 8th and completing the team Pete Atkinson 17th. Mike
Hetherton again won the over 60's title. The team contest was again close, but this time North Yorks Moors
were runners up.
1st race Carlton Challenge 25th April. Acorn had the runners up in both mens and womens categories, Sarah Tunstall
in the womens, Andy Hilton in the mens. Andy was well backed up by Andy Burt, Graham Birch and Andy Normandale
to give Acorn a narrow victory over Northumberland Fell Runners in the team competition. Though he doesn't turn
60 until the Summer, Mike Hetherton was 1st in the over 60's category (it's age at the end of the series that counts).
Andy dominates Ian Roberts Fell Race on 12th March. Our own Andy Hilton
won the race with Andy Normandale 5th and winner of the Yorks vets over 45 title.
In fact Andy's filled 5 of the top 10 places. We eagerly await the return to the fells of Andy Burt,
recovering from illness.
