West Yorkshire League

Unlike the other Leagues where the club affiliates to join the League and the team manager selects the team in consultation with coaches, anyone can enter the West Yorkshire League, but athletes must enter individually. There are no entries on the day, so enter by ? th April for the first meeting or at least 10 days before subsequent meetings. Note you only have to enter once for the whole series. Entry fee £ ? for seniors, £ ? for juniors for the whole series.

Under 11's this is a rare opportunity for you to compete in track and field.

All evening meetings start at 6.45pm, Saturday/Sunday meetings at 1pm. The Championship match will start at 12pm for field, 1pm for track.

1st meeting on Sunday 20th April 2008 at Huntington Stadium, York

On home turf and track City of York Athletic Club made a brilliant start to the West Yorkshire Track and Field League last weekend, with the mens team taking 3rd place and the womens team 4th place at the end of the first meet of 2008. 16 teams entered this first League meet, which is held across 7 dates culminating in the League Championships in August. Almost 500 athletes congregated at Huntington Stadium for the first day of competition in track and field athletics. City of York AC entered a team of 13 female and 18 male athletes who put in a good performance to kick off the season. With the backing of Ingrams Solicitors it's the aim of City of York AC to increase its membership, providing opportunities for local people to get involved in athletics at all levels; there's still time to enter the remaining meets in the League. At each days competition junior athletes can enter 3 events, with seniors permitted to enter as many as they wish. At the end of this first meet last years winner, Leeds City AC, lead the mens results at 76 points with last years runner up Wakefield District Harriers 2nd place on 61 points and City of York AC placed 3rd of 16 teams with 59 points. For City of York, Matthew Parker ran the 75m sprint in 11.5 seconds to take 2nd place, the Clubs only entry in this age group. For the under 13 boys Jake Stephenson took 6th place In the 800m and Edward Dixon came 5th with a discus throw of 13.66 metres. In the under 15 boys group Gregory Storey ran to 4th place in the 100m and Oliver Dixon took 2nd place in the 1500 metres.

City of York AC finished the day in joint lead with Leeds City AC in the under 17 mens group with some fantastic performances from our young athletes. James Buck took 3rd place in the 100m sprint in a time of 12.1 seconds with Jamie Garbutt only 0.1 seconds behind for 5th place. Oliver Bird gained points in all 3 of his events; coming 5th place in the 200 metres, 5th in the 800 metres and 4th with a long jump of 4.9 metres. Ryan Buck was also in the points with a 6th place long jump and 4th place in the 1500 metres. Other juniors competing were James Proctor, Tom Pavis, James Sutton, Patrick Evans and Russell Parker. In the senior mens category James Palmer took 5th place in the 200 metres and won the 800m in a time of 2 minutes 4.5 seconds. Placed 3rd in the 1500m was Iain Lynn with a time of 4 minutes 21 seconds. Also competing for City of York seniors were Paul Bird and Stephen Nesbitt.

At the top of the ladies results were Spenborough AC with 104 points, Wakefield Harriers on 96 points and Leeds City with 65 points. City of York AC gained points across all age groups entered, achieving 50 points on the day. For the under 11 girls Georgie Fenny ran to 2nd place in the 600m (2.05.5 mins) with Ceri Pick close behind in 4th place (2.12.1mins). Georgie also gained points for 4th place in 75m race (12.6 seconds) and 3rd best long jump of 3.04 metres. For the under 13 girls, Megan Savage took a resounding victory with a time of 12.7 seconds in the 70 metres hurdles, almost 1 second ahead of second place! Katy Wood took second place in the 800m, with Lauren Bird coming 5th and Lauren also took a 4th place long jump of 3.71 metres.

In the points for the under 15 girls were Laura Skelton coming 3rd in the 75 metre hurdle event as well as 3rd in the 100 metres, Megan Birch who took 6th place in the hurdles and Saffron Botterill who came 5th place in the 1500 metres. For the under 17 ladies Abigail Hardy-Mayo took 4th place with a 45.4 second 300m run and Charlotte Mason came 2nd with 1500 metres ran in 5 minutes 12.8 seconds. Also competing for the ladies team were Rachel White, Anya Limbert and Zoe Robson.
